poverty

Most of the world’s inhabitants and peoples live in poverty. Why is this? Is it enough to blame it on those who are poor, saying that they’re irresponsible, lazy, and make poor decisions? Are the governments of their countries responsible for the situation? These and other things are undoubtedly real reasons for poverty. Yet deeper and more universal causes of poverty and inequality are less often discussed reasons.

photo essay: Poverty

It's about poverty which is touching most of the people in Bulgaria. The country is one of the poorest and the most corrupted in the European community. After the fall of communism and the change to democracy people left their villages to come in capital Sofia with the idea to find work, but this dream never become true. Some of them find place on the street to sell flowers, or everything who can bring them some money everyday. But most of them wander in the city looking for food in the garbages or beg for money on the main streets of the city. The sad reality here in Bulgaria is the huge difference between the poor people who live with less than 5€/day and the richest people who have no limit to buy everything they want. And finally there is just 8 millions people who live in the country and 90% are still living in the village without work, money and help.

DROP OF HOPE

« Hope » is exactly what the homeless and impoverished say L’itinéraire provides. The street journal was established in 1990 by Daniel Héneault, a social worker. The newspaper gives tools to the homeless and people in deep poverty to abate the cycle of hopelessness. « L'itinéraire » is funded mainly by private donations financial and/or material. The newspaper is part of "Groupe L'itinéraire", an NGO who's mission is: «Social reinsertion, financial support, psychological support and to fight poverty. »

Articles of L'itinéraire, cover local social issues to international news and it is distributed two times every month. Most of the articles, are written by the news vendor themselves. Two teachers volunteer one day a week each, giving writing workshops to news vendor who are interested in becoming journalists. Sometimes, because of deep lack of writing skills, the volunteer teachers have to go back to basic language skills. Geneviève, one of the teachers said that seeing the smile and pride on their faces was salary enough.

News vendors are given a sense of responsability because they buy the news paper for a dollar and sell it for two. Robert Larouche who's the news vendor's coordinator, told me that they must be strict about this: The paper only helps them pay for the copies on the first day, but after that, they must learn not to spend all their money in order to keep enough to buy new copies.

Robert added: "Most of the time, when they knock on our door, they have had enough of life and feel hopeless. If they agree with the house rules, we accompany them until they have regained their confidence and their pride and they are enjoying a new life style." The result is pretty encouraging : Less then 15% go back to the street, according to Robert Larouche.
