poverty
Most of the world’s inhabitants and peoples live in poverty. Why is this? Is it enough to blame it on those who are poor, saying that they’re irresponsible, lazy, and make poor decisions? Are the governments of their countries responsible for the situation? These and other things are undoubtedly real reasons for poverty. Yet deeper and more universal causes of poverty and inequality are less often discussed reasons.
editorial
The internet is a vital medium, but sometimes nowadays we forget about oldfashioned printed formats that address topics comprehensively, not as a new agency report, nor as a photo op. Sometimes we lose interest in the essence, taking information as one-sentence announcements. In digital photography, we sometimes lose sight of the best photojournalism, as we get accustomed to the amateur photography that magazines, daily papers and the internet present to us as good enough.
Our purpose in INSIDE magazine is to bring you single-themed issues, which examine a topic from multiple perspectives – through photo-essays, essays, comics and interviews. INSIDE is meant to be a source of information, ideas and commentary that contributes to greater awareness and to interest in international issues.
The concept of the magazine originated last summer, during a car trip from Kep to Phnom Penh in Cambodia. With financial support from Slovakaid and all the interested partied, the first issue has come out, on the topic of poverty.
John Vink has been studying the theme of “Quest for Land” in Cambodia for ten years, and his collection has significant documentary value. Eric Nerrienet and Marcelo Fernandez bring us closer to the life realities facing those afflicted with AIDS. Jiřina Šiklová provides an wide-ranging view of women; Václav Havel’s interview with Renata Kalenská discusses poverty and freedom; Thierry Darnaudet speaks of his life with corruption; Baruch Myers describes Judaism’s perceptions of poverty; and Martin Bandžák shares photographs of the
non‑functioning health care in Congo and of post-earthquake Haiti.
We very much hope that INSIDE becomes a magazine you keep handy on your bookshelves, and that it serves you as an information source even years after its printing.
