poverty
Most of the world’s inhabitants and peoples live in poverty. Why is this? Is it enough to blame it on those who are poor, saying that they’re irresponsible, lazy, and make poor decisions? Are the governments of their countries responsible for the situation? These and other things are undoubtedly real reasons for poverty. Yet deeper and more universal causes of poverty and inequality are less often discussed reasons.

poverty and AIDS
Poor people are dying from AIDS. This phrase is used commonly; I would even say it’s become a common cliché people use. In these lines I aim not just to appeal for a fight against AIDS, nor simply to describe the tortuous path of the millions living with HIV day in and day out. After more than twelve years of examining the afflicted and above all educating the healthy, I make bold to say that the first of these two is and will remain simpler; and not just because I was trained and have practiced as aphysician for many years, but because discrimination and stigmatization have been and will continue to be the main cause of death for these “sick” people. AIDS, and poverty and/or riches, remain a synonym for discrimination and a death sentence. Yet this assertion is far from the reality of today, even in countries with low incomes, typically called poor countries. The AIDS epidemic has achieved in 10 years what tuberculosis, malaria and infantile diarrhea could not over many decades, mainly because many “rich” have been infected and affected by the HIV virus. And these “rich” led us to understand that AIDS is not just a medical problem, nor a problem of public health, but also an issue of rights and responsibilities, education, and acceptance of others.
